[Road To Street Car Nationals // Chapter.05] Second Car Nationals – Freee’s Ryohei’s 2006 Toyota Hilux Surf (4 Runner)

Team Freee’s is Tokyonur’s one of the closest friends. One of the original member Ryohei-san(Thebridge) who does Team spokesman, Freee’s Auto & Customs oversea service, and Tokyonur translation. Ryohei-san’s drift car is 2dr Levin, painted with zenki R35 gt-r gray. Since he’s known for C34 with Papa John’s sign too much that some people don’t know it’s the same guy.

And his 2^nd car for a daily use is 2006 Hilux surf(4runner in the US). One of the reason why he bought this car is a same reason as Low Brain Yassan  “Back to the Future’s Marty’s Toyota Pickup. However, the original Toyota pickup is hard to keep as a daily use car because of its age, so Ryohei-san picked newer version of it. Wait, it’s not even truck, but since he’s a family guy he picked more room.

There are few another conditions he want it to have as his family car. “It has to make them look like a happy family” “It has to be cool without lowering it” “It has to make his wife look hot when she drives it”  Yes, “no lowering” is a key point.

There were some other cars in Ryohei-san’s mind, such as E91 wagon and W204 wagon but He would have to lowering them and then it wouldn’t make them look like a happy family. So he went with a car can be cook with height.

His Hilux is kouki moon roof(one of the most popular grade) but it’s not 4WD. Since, he loves drifting and prerunner was not 4WD, he picked FR model.

When he bought the car, he bought all the parts for it(Method MR305 TOYO 285/75-16 2.5leveling kit on the front) he asked car dealer to bring it to his office and install them before he drove it to home so that he could finish it without is wife notice. He was like “Honey the car is here”. It’s called “Prerunner wife operation.”

It isn’t got much modified, but there are some interesting maniac USDM items. The temporally driving permit sticker is from illest Michael, and residential parking permit is from Kenny’s world Kenny. 

This time he has done refreshing new front grill and removing front fender mirror and covering holes, repainting by Nice body shop Craft Okada-san. I’m pretty sure he’s going to put the Pizza sign on his Hilux a the SCN so please come to see it’s on.

Tokyonurとは切っても切り離せない関係のTeam Freee’sですが、そのメンバーの中で広報的役割を担いつつ、Freee’s Auto & Customsの外交業務や、Tokyonurの翻訳を行っているのがRyohei-san (Thebridge)というわけです。

Ryohei-sanのドリフト用のメインカーは、色のチョイスとしては珍しいR35 GT-Rの前期のガンメタ色にペイントされた2drレビン。Papa John’sの行灯を装着したC34ローレルのイメージが強く、割と最近までハチロクに乗り換えた事を知らなかった人もいましたね。

そして普段の足”2nd Car”として活躍するのが2006年式のハイラックスサーフ。

購入に至る経緯は、以前紹介したLow BrainのYassanと同じく、Back To The Futureでブリハイが登場するシーンに憧れたのがきっかけ。ほんとあのシーンはカッコいいですよね。

しかし、年式的にもデイリーユースで使えるものではなく、現代版のブリハイとしてサーフをチョイス。ピックアップですらないですが、Ryohei-sanが重点を置いた”幸せな家族の演出”としては、サーフの方がポテンシャルは上です。

サーフを購入してしまえば必然的にローダウンする事は無いし、なにせ幸せそうな家族を演出してくれるキャラクターとしては申し分なし。美人の奥さんがイカツイSUVを運転している姿も、これまたカッコいい。

さらりと書いてしまいましたが、「ローダウンしなくていい」この要素が重要なのです。

サーフと購入比較対象として検討された、E91ワゴン、W204ワゴン。これらを購入すると間違いなくローダウンしてしまうビジョンが見えた時点で却下したそうだ。ローダウンした時点で”幸せなファミリーカー”として成り立たなくなります。

グレードは、後期のサンルーフ付きという事でしたが、意外な事に駆動方式はAWDではなくFRをチョイス。プリランナーが2輪駆動ですし、カナダ留学中に鍛えたスノードライビングやダートもFRの方が楽しいはずという思いがあったそうだ。

Ryohei-sanの希望を全て叶えるモディファイを施した状態で納車された。当時のMethodの新作ホイールに、Toyoの285/75RのMud Terrainを履かせ、フロント2.5インチのレベリングキットでリフトアップ。

しかしコレには裏話があり、購入時にはこれらのパーツは装着されておらず、納車された瞬間に自ら取り付けを行い、「ほら新しいクルマきたよ」っとシレっと自宅に帰宅。

見事に「プリランナー奥様号大作戦」は成功したのであった。

大きなモディファイは施していないが、ディティールに関していえばマニアックなUSアイテムの数々が散りばめられている。

フロントガラスに張られたグリーンのステッカーは住民専用のパーミットで、元illestのKennyが「日本人ってこーゆーの好きなんだろ？だろだろ？(笑)」という1周回ったUSDMを理解した上での贈り物だ。

白いステッカーはディーラーでクルマを購入した際に、そのまま乗って帰る事が出来る、日本でいうところの仮ナンバー的なステッカーだ。これまたillestのMichaelからの贈り物だ。

今回のSCNにあわせての変更点は、フロントグリルのリフレッシュだけでなく、JDMアイテム”通称ガッツミラー”のスムージングと、それに伴う塗装。神奈川をベースとするカスタムカーフリークから愛されてやまないCraftのOkada-sanによる塗装だ。

SCNの会場では、いつも通りアレを装着するようなので、待ち合わせスポットとしてランドマークにしてみて下さいね。
